Proselytizing of any kind is not allowed in Israel. This includes by Jews, Christians, Muslims, Baha'i, and the crazy man on the corner starting his own religion. Imagine how crazy the place would be if it was allowed?

A quote from the US State Department's website: "A 1977 anti-proselytizing law prohibits any person from offering or receiving material benefits as an inducement to conversion; however, there have been no reports of the law's enforcement. A bill that would have restricted proselytizing further was promulgated in 2000; however, similar bills did not reach a final vote in the past and local observers do not believe that this bill will be enacted. Christian and other evangelical groups asserted that the draft bills were discriminatory and served to intimidate Christian groups. Missionaries are allowed to proselytize, although the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) voluntarily refrains from proselytizing under an agreement with the Government." From http://www.state.gov/g/drl/rls/irf/2001/5697.htm If I understand this correctly, the law prohibits them specifically from "offering material benefits" which implies that if a missionary did not offer "material benefit" then it would not be against the law. It is, however, definitely frowned upon by the Jewish community, in Israel and abroad (myself included).

This may be the only thing Israel and Saudi Arabia have in common.

It is a crime to solicit your religion, but you have the right to be any religion you wish to be in Israel.
